Best used family cars in Ireland for 2026: SUVs, estates and 7-seaters

Motorly Editorial··9 min read

For most Irish families buying used in 2026, a 2021-on Hyundai Tucson or 2022-on Kia Sportage is the strongest all-rounder: both scored five stars from Euro NCAP (2021 and 2022). For seven seats, look at the 2020-on Kia Sorento (five stars, 2020). Before you buy, check that exact build year’s rating, its motor tax basis and its NCT history.

Direct answer updated 2 November 2026. Earlier guide updated 2 November 2026.

Primary sources: Euro NCAP: Kia Sportage · Euro NCAP: Kia Sorento · RSA: about the NCT

A good family car has to keep everyone safe, swallow child seats and a buggy, and not cost a fortune to tax and run. Below are eleven used SUVs, estates and 7-seaters that meet those tests, with the model years their safety rating covers.

Last checked: 2 November 2026. Median asking prices on this page come from 20,793 live Motorly listings for these models and model years. They are what sellers are asking, not what cars sell for, and they change daily. Where fewer than 20 adverts matched, we show “Not enough listings” instead of a price.

How we picked these family cars

Every car here had to meet four family criteria. This is an editorial shortlist, not a ranking of every car on sale.

  • Safety: a published Euro NCAP five-star result for the generation we name (or five stars only with the optional safety pack, as noted)—including ratings that have since expired, and noting where a later reassessment scored lower (the Qashqai’s 2025 four-star result). We filter prices to those model years only; check the exact build and year.
  • Space: room for two child seats with ISOFIX points in the back, a practical boot and, for the 7-seaters, a usable third row.
  • Running costs: a choice of petrol, hybrid or plug-in versions, and a motor tax band you can check before buying.
  • Availability: enough cars for sale in Ireland to compare like with like, rather than chasing one rare advert.

Ratings expire. Euro NCAP ratings carry the year of the test and are only valid for six years, because the tests get tougher. For example, the Skoda Octavia’s 2019 five-star rating expired on 1 January 2026. An expired rating does not make a car unsafe, but it was set against an older, easier test, so we say plainly where a rating has expired.

Best used family SUVs

A higher seat makes lifting children in and out easier, and these four have the space and safety record families need.

Hyundai Tucson (2021-on)

Euro NCAP: Five stars (2021). The rating reflects the safety-assist equipment fitted to the tested car, so confirm what the car you view actually has.

The current Tucson has a roomy back seat, a wide boot opening and a choice of petrol, hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions. It is one of the most common family SUVs on Irish roads, which makes like-for-like comparison easy.

Median asking price €28,950 across 3,651 live Motorly listings for 2021-on cars on 2 November 2026.

Kia Sportage (2022-on)

Euro NCAP: Five stars (2022). The rating covers the current generation, sold from 2022.

The Sportage shares much of its engineering with the Tucson. Rear legroom and the flat boot floor suit child seats and buggies, and it is offered with petrol, diesel, hybrid and plug-in hybrid power.

Median asking price €30,925 across 2,580 live Motorly listings for 2022-on cars on 2 November 2026.

Nissan Qashqai (2021-on)

Euro NCAP: Five stars (2021). A 2025 Euro NCAP reassessment gave the Qashqai four stars, so check which rating applies to the exact build and year you are viewing.

The Qashqai is a little smaller than the Tucson and Sportage, which helps in town and in tight driveways. It suits a family with one or two young children better than one with teenagers.

Median asking price €26,950 across 2,003 live Motorly listings for 2021-on cars on 2 November 2026.

Toyota RAV4 (2019-on)

Euro NCAP: Five stars (2019, Hybrid AWD tested). Euro NCAP ratings expire after six years, and this one expired on 1 January 2026, so treat it as history rather than a current rating.

This RAV4 was sold in Ireland mainly as a self-charging hybrid, with an automatic gearbox. It is the largest of the four SUVs here, with a long boot floor that suits dogs and sports gear.

Median asking price €34,666 across 2,185 live Motorly listings for 2019-on cars on 2 November 2026.

Best used family estates and hatchbacks

Estates and larger hatchbacks often give more boot space for the money than an SUV, with a lower loading lip for buggies and shopping.

Skoda Octavia (2020-on)

Euro NCAP: Five stars (2019, hatch and Combi). The 2019 rating covered both the hatch and the Combi estate. Euro NCAP ratings expire after six years, and this one expired on 1 January 2026, so treat it as history rather than a current rating.

The Octavia gives you more boot and rear-seat room than most SUVs of a similar price, with a lower loading lip. The Combi estate is the version to look for if you carry a buggy and shopping at the same time.

Median asking price €29,450 across 2,349 live Motorly listings for 2020-on cars on 2 November 2026.

Volkswagen Golf (2020-on)

Euro NCAP: Five stars (2019). Euro NCAP ratings expire after six years, and this one expired on 1 January 2026, so treat it as history rather than a current rating.

The Golf is the most compact car on this list. It suits a small family that parks in town; look for the Golf Estate if boot space matters more than length.

Median asking price €27,995 across 3,111 live Motorly listings for 2020-on cars on 2 November 2026.

Toyota Corolla (2019-on)

Euro NCAP: Five stars (2019, hatch tested; saloon also covered). Euro NCAP ratings expire after six years, and this one expired on 1 January 2026, so treat it as history rather than a current rating.

The Corolla comes as a hatch, a saloon and a Touring Sports estate, almost all with a hybrid automatic. The estate is the family pick; the hatch has a smaller boot.

Median asking price €22,950 across 2,497 live Motorly listings for 2019-on cars on 2 November 2026.

Skoda Superb (2024-on)

Euro NCAP: Five stars (2024). The rating applies to the current Superb, sold from 2024.

If you need limousine-like rear legroom without moving to a seven-seater, the Superb estate is hard to beat for space. Fewer have reached the used market, so expect less choice than the Octavia.

Median asking price €43,950 across 452 live Motorly listings for 2024-on cars on 2 November 2026.

Best used 7-seaters

If you need a third row, check how easy it is to reach and whether the boot is still usable with all seats up.

Kia Sorento (2020-on)

Euro NCAP: Five stars (2020). The rating covers the current generation, sold from 2020.

The Sorento is a full-size seven-seat SUV with a third row that suits children for regular trips. Hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions are common, so match the fuel type to how far you drive.

Median asking price €46,314 across 582 live Motorly listings for 2020-on cars on 2 November 2026.

Skoda Kodiaq (2024-on)

Euro NCAP: Five stars (2024). The rating covers the second-generation Kodiaq, sold from 2024. The first-generation Kodiaq scored five stars in 2017, but that rating expired on 1 January 2024.

The Kodiaq comes with five or seven seats, so confirm the third row is fitted before you view. Check how easy the third row is to reach with child seats fitted in the middle row.

Median asking price €51,950 across 1,092 live Motorly listings for 2024-on cars on 2 November 2026.

Hyundai Santa Fe (2024-on)

Euro NCAP: Four stars as standard; five stars with the safety pack (2024). The five-star result only applies to cars with the optional safety pack, so ask the seller to show it is fitted.

The boxy current Santa Fe is designed around its third row, with a large tailgate opening. It is newer and rarer than the Sorento, so check how many are listed before you set your heart on one.

Median asking price €66,995 across 291 live Motorly listings for 2024-on cars on 2 November 2026.

Also worth a look: the Peugeot 5008 is a seven-seat SUV with three individual middle-row seats, and the Volvo XC90 is a larger premium seven-seater. Check the Euro NCAP rating and its date for the exact year before you buy either.

Petrol, diesel, hybrid or electric for a family?

  • Petrol: simple and usually the cheapest to buy. A good fit for school runs and short trips.
  • Diesel: suits families who cover long motorway distances. Lots of short trips can clog a diesel particulate filter, so ask how the car has been used.
  • Self-charging hybrid: no plug needed and smooth in town traffic. Hybrids on this list come with automatic gearboxes.
  • Plug-in hybrid: cheapest to run if you can charge at home and most trips are short. Without charging it carries a heavy battery for little benefit.
  • Electric: works well with home charging. Ask for a battery health report, and note that SEAI purchase grants are for new electric cars only and are not available for used ones.

Motor tax on a used family car

Motor tax in Ireland depends on when the car was first registered, not on the model. There are three bases (motortax.ie):

  • Registered before 1 January 2008: taxed on engine size.
  • Registered 1 July 2008 to 31 December 2020: taxed on CO2 emissions measured under the older NEDC test.
  • Registered from 1 January 2021: taxed on CO2 emissions measured under the newer WLTP test.

Cars registered between 1 January and 30 June 2008 were taxed on engine size at first, then moved to the CO2 system at the next renewal where that was cheaper; the band then stays with the car for life. Imported used cars first registered abroad after 1 July 2008 are taxed on CO2, using the NEDC or WLTP figure the car was registered with. Because the band belongs to the exact car, read the CO2 figure or engine size on the Vehicle Registration Certificate. See our motor tax guide for how bands work.

NCT for used family cars

Private cars have their first NCT at four years old, then every two years until they are ten, and every year after that (RSA, NCTS). Most of the cars on this list are on the two-year cycle. Check the date on the NCT certificate and ask for the last result: a long NCT saves you a test soon after buying.

Family car checklist before you buy

  • Car check: run the registration through our free car check before you view.
  • Price: compare the advert with similar cars using the price checker.
  • Mileage: follow our guide to checking for clocking and match the NCT certificate and service records.
  • Scams: read how to avoid car-buying scams and never pay a deposit for a car you have not seen.
  • Child seats: bring your child seats to the viewing and fit them, checking the ISOFIX points and the space left in front.
  • Seats and boot: fold every seat, try the third row on a 7-seater and put your buggy in the boot.
  • Safety rating: check the Euro NCAP rating and its year for the exact model year, and whether it has expired.
  • Monthly cost: if you are paying monthly, compare options with our finance calculator.
  • UK imports: estimate VRT with our VRT calculator before you commit.
  • Dealer or private: know your rights when buying from a dealer compared with a private seller, and ask a dealer what warranty comes with the car.
